International Symposium

Rationale and aims

The research group Esbrina, Contemporary subjectivities and learning environments (consolidated research group 2009SGR 0503, former consolidated research group Education, Innovation and New Technologies, FINT, 2005SGR 0431), places special emphasis on promoting excellence in investigation, innovation, dissemination and knowledge transference. Scientific encounters are a way of supporting these aims. Organising an international symposium, about the meaning and experience of changes taking place in universities in the last 30 years, will allow us to present and debate the results of the investigation The effects of social changes in the work and professional lives of university faculty (SEJ2006-01876), and exchange knowledge and perspectives.

In the last 30 years, higher education institutions have undergone considerable transformations and social, economic, cultural and technological changes. The process of the redefinition and restructuring of such institutions has decisively influenced the lives, professional identities and work conditions of faculty and researchers. This situation of change, which has a profound effect from the fundamental structures to the very conception of the mission and meaning of the university in today’s world, is generating the configuration of an emerging field of studies centred on the investigation of different phenomena that conform to and emerge from this collective process.

The aim of this symposium is to analyse the meaning of these changes and the positions faculty take in regards to them.

The specific objectives are:

Debate the legislative processes and institutional politics implemented in Spain and within the European framework, paying special attention to those aspects that have to do with the restructuring of the teaching, research and management dimensions.
Reflect on those institutional developments linked to the professional restructuring of the University considered in studies done in the field, and their relationship to the integration process of the new European space of higher education and investigation.
Examine the reach of the professional restructuring in the life and work of university faculty from their lived experiences.
